Theo, I’d challenge you to focus a little less on getting the first draft perfect and a little more on getting all the information out on paper and then sorting it more and more tightly in a spiral process of improvement. I too find the Five Writers mental construct to be generally less that helpful, but William Zinsser spoke truly when he said “the essence of writing is rewriting.”
The most talented and successful writers out there will universally tell you that redrafting is nine-tenths of the law. Of course, for all I know, you make all your money writing and here I am, a poor law student trying to tell you how to do your job. But I figured I’d toss the advice out there nonetheless.
